First Sikh NDP leader, from Canada Jagmeet Singh gets engaged

Jagmeet Singh, Punjab-origin Canadian leader from New Democratic Party has got engaged to fashion designer Gurkiran Kaur as announced by the politician himself on Twitter.

Reportedly, Jagmeet Singh — the first minority community politician to lead a federal party in Canada — proposed to Kaur, 27, at a private party on Tuesday. CBC reported he surprised Kaur by popping the question in front of family and friends at a restaurant where they had their first date.

“She said yes,” the 38-year-old tweeted, sharing two photos of him and his fiancée!

The Toronto Star reported that when Singh was asked why had he decided to make this news public, he said he was excited about the engagement. “I’m super excited to take this step forward — to have a life and future together with my partner,” he was quoted as saying by the Star.   

Singh took the reins of the NDP in October being the first Sikh to do so. The NDP is one of the three largest political parties in Canada.
